About Mold Zero
About Mold Zero
Mold Zero did not start as a business plan. It started with my wife getting sick, and with a beautiful old house that was slowly making her that way. Understanding that is the best way to understand why we do this work the way we do.
When Mold Became Personal
We were living in a home more than a hundred years old, the kind with character and solid bones and stories in the walls. What we did not know was that it was also holding moisture we could not see. My wife started feeling wrong, fatigue and headaches and symptoms that came and went, and every doctor and every test came back normal. She did not feel normal. Eventually she decided to find the cause herself, and a mold test came back with levels through the roof. That explained everything. We started going through our home looking for the source, and we found hidden moisture in places we never thought to check, water behind old plaster, damp lumber in the attic, and a leaking HVAC drain feeding a patch of mold in a crawlspace we did not even know we had. Watching someone you love feel unwell in her own home, with no clear answer, changes how you think about what a house can quietly hide.
Finding a Better Way
The deeper we went, the clearer it became that hidden mold was far more common than homeowners realized, and that most remediation was either destructive, incomplete, or both. Homes were being torn apart because remediators had no better options, and people were staying sick because the mold was never really removed or kept from returning. My wife, who spent her career as a registered nurse, discovered a cold sterilant fogging technology used in medical environments but almost never applied in homes. It was not a magic bullet on its own, but combined with source removal, HEPA cleaning, moisture correction, and proper containment, it became a complete system. No company was bringing those pieces together in a clean, non-destructive, homeowner-friendly way, so I built one.
Two States, One Standard
Mold Zero began in California, but it grew up in Florida. After we found success treating our own home and helping friends, I was asked to treat properties in Florida, and the Sunshine State turned out to be the perfect training ground. Florida is humid year round, mold is a constant, and the state regulates the industry strictly. Every insurance job had to pass an independent assessor’s test, and if it did not pass, we went back and did it again. That pressure forced us to raise our standards, get certified, and get licensed. California, by contrast, has almost no mold regulation at all, which means anyone with a spray bottle can call themselves a remediator. We brought Florida’s discipline back to California and gave our clients here a level of rigor most local companies never adopted.
What Makes Us Different
Mold Zero is led by Rusty Tweed, NORMI-certified, BBB-accredited, and the author of a book on mold methodology drawn from more than a thousand completed jobs across two states. We treat mold as an environmental system, not a stain. We correct the moisture source first, treat the whole affected environment rather than a single room, and verify our work with an independent third-party laboratory rather than testing ourselves. We work non-destructively wherever possible, because tearing a home apart should be the last resort and not the first. And we keep the health of the people in the building at the center of every decision, because that is where this company came from. That combination, the certifications, the book, the two-state experience, and the independent lab verification, is what separates a real remediation company from someone with a fogger and a business card.
Our Guiding Principle
Everything we do comes back to one idea that we learned the hard way in our own home. What is not corrected at the source always comes back. Killing the visible mold is easy. Finding the water that fed it, correcting it, and proving the home is clean afterward is the actual job, and it is the only thing that gives a family lasting peace of mind. As the EPA puts it, the key to controlling mold is controlling moisture, and as a Los Angeles mold remediation company that is the standard we hold ourselves to on every property we touch.
